Up for sale, a 1963 Epiphone Texan FT79 in excellent condition, complete with a hardshell case. Not to be confused with various reissue models, this is a genuine vintage Texan, manufactured by Gibson in the USA at their Kalamazoo factory and crafted alongside Gibson's J-50, with identical body dimensions. Perhaps most famous for its appearance in the hands of Paul McCartney playing “Yesterday” on the Ed Sullivan show, this early (production began in ‘58) Texan iteration features a shorter “open book” headstock and full 1 11/16" nut width.

Weighing 4lbs 9oz, tonewoods include a solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides, with a mahogany neck capped by a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. What sets the Texan apart (and truly makes it more akin to a Gibson AJ) is the full 25 ½” scale length, which puts extra tension on the solid spruce top and yields an incredibly powerful sound. The instrument has excellent projection and punch, with the benefit of decades of use tempering the soundboard for an open and exceedingly dynamic tone. There’s significant bass register roundness and heft, with equal presence afforded each string, and a dry, woody quality that extends to a sparkling treble register. This Texan FT79 has been professionally set up here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.

The headstock has a shallow V-shaped repair favoring the bass side, professionally addressed long ago and perfectly stable at full string tension.

The gloss Natural nitro lacquer finish exhibits prominent checking, and the center seam on top has been reglued and cleated, with a couple additional smaller cracks that have been stabilized as well. There is faint buckle worming on the back, a small area of scuffing through the finish near the top binding on the bass-side lower bout rim, and various small dings and finish scratches. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean with some shallow marks that are not distracting to the palm.

A Gator-branded hardshell case is included.
